Seville East Retreat: a pavilion for multi-generational living

What do you do when your adult kids still live at home, you want a bit of separation, and you have a beautiful view to embrace? You build a retreat pavilion for yourself to enjoy!

One of the things we love to do is help our clients create a more flexible home that can adapt to their changing needs. This satellite addition is a way to transform a typical existing home into a functional and flexible multi-generational home, while also taking advantage of the unique qualities of the site.

Seville East is a beautiful area in the rolling hills of the Yarra Valley. The new satellite addition is a way to offer the clients a separate space of their own which takes advantage of north light, and is a way to provide additional space without disrupting the flow of the existing house and property.

The area surrounding Seville East is primarily farmland, so rather than building a standard extension attached to the existing house which would add to the bulk of the existing house and impact the surrounding established gardens, a site was chosen near the existing house in a grassed area overlooking trees and forest to the north. We adopted the pattern of smaller outbuildings dotted around the property to create a standalone retreat that will feel a world away from the busy family home and fit in with the wider landscape.

Inside the retreat, there's a lounge area, a bedroom, walk-in-robe, and ensuite bathroom. There's plenty of space for the clients to relax and enjoy some alone time, while the shared areas of the existing house are still available for sharing meal times together or spending time as a family, offering the perfect balance of gathering and retreat.

Seville East Retreat is the perfect place for the owners to enjoy some alone time and give more privacy to their adult kids. Similarly, this creative solution to the need for additional living space makes the home more flexible and adaptable into the future.
